Your trust's responsibilities
Trustees are responsible for a number of duties and obligations. If they don't meet these, they can be held legally accountable.
Trustee obligations
Māori land trustees are responsible for making decisions about the whenua for the benefit of all the owners.
Running effective hui
Trustees should hold regular hui to bring the trust together, and update owners on what's happening with the whenua. How often you hold these meetings will depend on what’s in your trust order.
Creating and maintaining a register of owners
Trustees must create and maintain a register of owners — you can't meet your obligations as a trustee without one. Find out how.
Record-keeping
Trustees must keep and be able to share information relating to the trust. This includes core documents like the trust deed and other records like minutes of meetings.
Understanding quorums
A quorum is the minimum number of owners or trustees you need to have in attendance at a hui, so that you can make decisions and vote on matters to do with the whenua.
